It is Christmas Day, and I find myself daydreaming about Christmas’s past. Mom and Dad made Christmas special. This time of year I really miss them.
In the mid 1950’s, our neighborhood replaced the wall phones with a dial phone. Christmas morning we were surprised with a wall phone installed in our upstairs bedroom, another in the play house and one in the barn. We kids could call each other, but most of the time we wanted to talk to dad while he was in the barn doing chores. One of those phones hangs on my office wall today. Wish I could reach over, give it a crank and chat with Daddy.
When my boys were grade school age, I quizzed dad about his Christmas memories. He reminisced, while I listened:
“Back in the 1920’s, I was about age ten, and one Christmas we had lots of snow. Dad put two teams of mules strung out on a big sleigh. We Donovan’s and the Shannon family snuggled in the sleigh and went to the Butlers for Christmas. It was six miles to Butlers. Back in those days you didn’t have graded roads, just a path between fields. I don’t recall ever having a Christmas tree when I was young. The only Christmas presents I remember receiving were a little toy train and a red wagon.”
Today, our holidays are spent with childhood farm friends. Living in Arizona, we don’t have that intimidating winter weather to travel in, no mittens or boots are needed as we dine in the sunshine on the patio.
But in an instant, I remember like yesterday, thinking our farm was the most beautiful place in the world. Sitting on the window seat gazing at the large white snow flakes spreading its blanket over the farm in the light of a full moon. In the corner was the glow from our nativity set and the room had the scent of a cedar tree. I was warm, safe and happy, and the farm was my Winter Wonderland!
Thank you for simple joys –
gifts of joy you’ve given to me and my
family and friends throughout the years.
It has been sixty years ago –
but I still feel the little girl Christmas joy
knowing I am safe with your love.
In Jesus’ name, Amen
Merry Christmas from my family to yours!
